Wainscott Sewing Society Poem 1927

Wainscott Sewing Society
By Mrs. Howard Hand 1927

In the Long Island Collection-East Hampton Library

In the year of 1869
That seems to us a long long time
The ladies met a dozen or so
To organize a society to sew

That afternoon these ladies spent
At Deacon Levi Hedges so they went
It was the custom don’t you see
To be invited out to tea

These ladies worked from year to year
And helped with their gifts far and near
Nearly all of these have passed away
But a few remains with us today

This work had gone on from year to year
By old and young but full of good cheer
The cemetery fence we worked and got
Besides we have given away a lot

For the Home for the Friendless we once did sew
Then for Dr. Forbes Mission as you all know
We worked for this building and the land
Now it is all paid for we feel pretty grand

The sheds we built for the auto and horse
For if they had died it would have been a great loss
And then after we had a little talk
We built the sidewalks for you to walk

I have told you some of the work we have done
Now I will tell you of some of the fun
We meet every month to talk and to sew
And eat a good supper; I have a good time you know

The month of November we feed the men
To a ten cent supper they all come so then
They know it’s a good place to meet
And men you know like a good thing to eat

We have Fairs in the summer and in the Fall
It would take too long to mention them all
But our chicken pie suppers when it comes to them
We wish to thank our Bridgehampton friends

They come through mud and they come through when it snows
They come by two and they come in a load
And to all that has been given great and small
May Gods richer blessings rest on you all

And now as this is Visiting Day
We welcome the Daughters of the Mothers who have passed away
Eight new members we have with us today
And the Wainscott Sewing Society welcomes those from far away.
