About

Since 1908, the Chapel has proudly served as Wainscott’s non-denominational Community Center. The Wainscott Sewing Society, the Chapel’s owner, is a community based 501(c)(3) not-for-profit whose primary mission is to preserve and maintain the Chapel. Originally the Chapel was owned by the Wainscott Village Improvement Society. In 1953, this group disbanded and the deed to the Chapel was given to the Wainscott Sewing Society. The Wainscott Sewing Society was founded in 1869. The Chapel is a privately owned Community Center, it does not receive any tax payer support.

Is the Chapel a church? No, the Chapel has never been a church. First it was a school house in Bridgehampton and then it was a community center in Wainscott. Different religious, community and self-help organizations rent the Chapel for their meetings.

An interesting note, Wainscott is a hamlet of East Hampton. A hamlet is defined as: a village without a church of its own. If Wainscott had its own church, possibly it would have been a town instead of a hamlet.
